LEETR Employment and Careers in Childcare

Childcare is a rewarding career. When you see a child in your care say their first word, take their first steps, say hello to you everyday they arrive and goodbye everyday they leave and you know inside that you are making a difference in the child's life that is in your care. You, yourself are learning, teaching and encouraging with resources and skills that you have gained from study and industry interaction.

As a childcare worker you will have to….

  • keep a smile on your face and interact pleasantly when changing a dirty nappy
  • show enthusiasm and interest when you are shown a squashed snail or a wiggly worm
  • show no fear of spiders or any other creepy crawlies
  • not flinch at the sight of blood, vomit or any other bodily fluids
  • have open arms for sloppy kisses from little people with runny noses
  • have open arms for hugs from vegemite, paint or mud coated hands
  • encourage and come up with confidence building comments when you can not see the dog in the painting that the child is showing you
As a childcare worker you wear many hats. You are ….
  • a translator who can understand many languages including two year old and one year old English e.g. you know that “ugh” means please pick me up or that a finger pointing to objects in the room means look at the window, the door, the pictures etc.
  • an architect who designs and regularly re arranges the room
  • a removalist who moves and alters equipment on a regular  basis
  • a cleaner
  • a musician
  • a dancer
  • an athlete
  • a scientist – who understands the universe, why does the wind blow? Why is the sky blue, Why, why, why
  • a mediator- who settles confrontations on a regular  basis
  • a carer for over loved insects
  • a miracle worker – who can get very active toddlers to sleep
  • an actor – who can portray many characters
  • a listening ear for parents
  • a counselor
  • a knowledge base
